Moving is without a doubt one of the most stressful things you’ll ever do, and since moving can come quite a few times in your lifetime, it helps to have some tips to help keep that stress to a minimum! Here are just a few absolutely essential tips for your upcoming and stress-free move!
Pack AND Unpack Strategically
How and when things are packed will make a world of difference when it comes to how stressful or how stress-free your move ends up being. If you want to rest immediately after arriving in your new home, consider having your movers pack your clothes, bedding, bed and other bedroom things you’ll need, as well as your toiletries last so that they can be unloaded first.
Label everything carefully and unpack one room at a time, starting with absolutely necessary items. If you can, color code boxes when you label them for each room. For example: Kitchen: Blue could mean dishes, or green could mean towels and washcloths, while yellow is dry goods. This will help minimize the need to dig through a ton of boxes to find the one or two items you need.
Don’t Neglect Yourself
Don’t forget to unwind and just take it easy when you arrive in your new home and the few necessities are unpacked! Don’t feel like you have to get everything done in one night. Call it quits before it gets dark and go out to dinner. Maybe even see a movie. If you’re moving on a Saturday, you can sleep in the next day and just unpack a little as you go. This will give you a chance to let the stress slide and also really enjoy the moving process. You’ve been looking forward to this day for a long while and you want to make it special, right? Don’t overdo it. If you feel tired, take a nap and get back to it when you’re a little more well rested. Take a walk around your new neighborhood and don’t sweat it!
Don’t Forget to Pack a “First Night” Box
One of the best things you can do for yourself when it comes to a stress-free move is packing a “first night” box of all of the things you’ll need on the first night without going through anything else. Are you wondering what might go in such a box? Here’s a little cheat sheet we put together for you:
Bedding- Don’t Forget a Pillow!
Paper towels and toilet paper
Coffee maker and/or tea kettle and the items to make it.
Expansive Toiletry kit with toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, hair products, makeup, travel size shampoo, conditioner, body wash and mouthwash.
Any Prescriptions you might be taking.
Checkbook and cash
Pajamas and a change of clothes.
If you plan on showering, you will also need to pack a towel.
A book or a movie you might want to watch + a personal DVD player. -OR- If your cellular coverage is good, you could use your phone and your favorite streaming service.
Address book or list of key phone numbers
A framed photo or some other momento that will help you feel at home the first night.
Moving and staying in your new home for the first time may seem like a stressful ordeal, but it doesn’t have to be! It all comes down to being prepared for the worst but expecting the best, as well as making the most of the situation. Good luck! But remember: You got this!
